That sharp pool-like smell when you fill a glass is hard to ignore. If you have wondered why tap water smells chlorine, the short answer is that your water utility likely added a disinfectant to control germs as water travels through miles of pipes to your faucet. It serves a public-health purpose, but that does not mean you have to enjoy the smell, taste, or idea of drinking it every day.

When Chlorine Odor Is Normal - and When to Pay Attention

A mild chlorine scent from cold tap water can be common, especially after local maintenance or during warmer months. If the smell is temporary and your utility has issued a notice about flushing or treatment changes, that may explain it.

Still, your senses are useful. Pay attention when the odor suddenly changes, becomes unusually strong, or comes with a different color, cloudiness, sediment, or metallic taste. Those issues are not always caused by chlorine itself. They can point to plumbing conditions, a water-main event, private well concerns, or changes in the local supply.

Contact your water utility or local health department promptly if your water has any of these warning signs:

Chlorine Is Not the Only Thing Affecting Taste
