AF-2 reduction elements are designed for use in conjunction with The Water Machine® black carbon purification elements (not white ceramic filters) to adsorb the following unwanted elements found in drinking water:
Arsenic V and pre-oxidized Arsenic III, Fluoride, and other residual heavy metal ions
Under normal conditions these AF-2 elements last 1,000 gallons in The Water Machine every 333 refills, or about once a year. Actual lifespan is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water. High levels of fluoride, arsenic and heavy metals may reduce the capacity and efficiency of the elements.
ARSENIC: Arsenic is a natural contaminant that can enter well water through the soil and rocks that contain it. Arsenic can also enter groundwater from mine tailing waste and industrial activities. The arsenic dissolves into the water and has no smell, taste, or color. These filters target the entire family of arsenic oxide anions as well as the arsenic cations.
FLUORIDE: Testing for fluoride was based on 20-30ppm of the ion in the influent aqueous solution at a flow rate of no more than 3 gallons per minute (11 liters per minute) per cubic foot of media. Results of < 1ppm of the fluoride ion in the effluent were typical for the media (>95% reduction). Under optimum conditions, effluent concentrations of less than 50 parts per billion were readily achieved (>99.75% reduction). Activated Alumina Technology: Utilizes high-grade activated aluminum oxide for efficient fluoride removal.
HOW DO AF-2 ARSENIC and FLUORIDE FILTERS WORK?
We developed these filters to specifically address concerns of arsenic found in well water and the fluoride intentionally added to municipal water all over the United States.
The AF-2 filters effectively absorb arsenic (Arsenic V and pre-oxidized Arsenic III), fluoride (Sodium Fluoride, Sodium Fluorosilicate, Fluorosilicic Acid, aka hydrofluorosilicic acid) and other residual heavy metal ions. This means cleaner, safer drinking water for you and your loved ones.
The media inside the AF-2 filters contains high-grade activated aluminum oxide, which currently is the most efficient media available for extracting fluoride from water.
Here are the results we obtained when testing the AF-2 arsenic and fluoride water filters. The reduction over time is due to additional residual process dust being washed free from the AF-2 arsenic and fluoride water filters as the system is used. To give a scale for comparison purposes we include test results from a national brand of toothpaste and water boiled in an aluminum pan.
National brand toothpaste 52.878 ppm aluminum
Water boiled in an aluminum pan for five minutes: 2.791 ppm aluminum
· AF2 after conditioning (5 cycles): .178 ppm aluminum
· AF2 after 10 Cycles: .037 ppm aluminum
· AF2 after 20 Cycles: .029 ppm aluminum
While the above results indicate that the residual process dust adds a minute amount of aluminum to the water, the filters reduce aluminum from the water. We tested water that naturally contained .320ppm aluminum and filtered it through the combination of the black carbon filters and the post-conditioned AF-2 arsenic and fluoride water filters (5 cycles). The results showed a net reduction in aluminum contamination (Raw influent: .320ppm - Effluent after passing through the black carbon filters and AF-2 arsenic and fluoride water filters: .232ppm). In other words, the black carbon elements removed more aluminum from the water than was added by the AF-2 arsenic and fluoride water filters.
The AF-2 shell is made from safe, non-leaching food-grade Polypropylene #5, which is BPA-Free and is used for food items such as mustard, ketchup bottles and yogurt containers.
Priming and Installation Instructions:
1. Remove the blue caps from the top and bottom of the filters.
2. Turn the cold water on the faucet to a light stream, just past a dripping rate.
3. Place the beige washer in between the filter and the faucet, holding it all together firmly. This will create a seal.
4. Hold for 30 seconds with the water flowing through. Now the AF-2 filters are primed. Screw the filters onto the bottom of the black carbon filter’s stem. (These hang below the black carbon filters in the bottom chamber).
5. Make sure the flow direction arrow is pointing DOWN.
6. Call your mom and tell her you love her. Write down the install date and note to replace the filters in a year.
